Here the Spoils of Hunayn Were Divided
Makkah
Al-Ji'ranah is located north of Makkah Al-Mukarramah with a slight incline to the east, at a distance of approximately 29 km. It is one of the places of Al-Hill (outside the sacred boundary of Al-Haram), and the Prophet ﷺ took it as a place of residence after the Battle of Hunayn, staying there for thirteen nights. The spoils were divided there and distributed among the Muhajireen, the new Muslims from Makkah, and a group of tribal leaders.
The wisdom behind this distribution was unclear to some of the Ansar (Helpers), so the Prophet ﷺ explained to them that he gave to those people to win their hearts over, while entrusting the others to the faith and goodness placed in their hearts. From Al-Ji'ranah, the Prophet ﷺ entered Ihram for Umrah in Dhul-Qa'dah 8 AH, and then returned to Madinah at the end of the same month.
The location includes the Well of Al-Ji'ranah and a historical mosque whose construction has been renewed. Early Islamic inscriptions are also spread across its rocks, confirming its direct connection to the events of the Prophet’s biography (Seerah).
