Athal Dam

An Umayyad Witness to the Arts of Water Construction

Makkah

Built during the Umayyad era, Athal Dam constitutes one of the principal archaeological Water landmarks in Mina, extending approximately 40 meters in length, and continues to retain its structural integrity.

Athal Dam is located in Al-Muaisim, Mina, northeast of Makkah. For those heading from Al-Muaisim toward Al-Sharai, it is on the left

Its construction dates back to the Umayyad era, and it is one of the historical water structures that has preserved its ancient character over the centuries.

The dam is 40 meters long, 7 meters high at its centre, and 5.5 meters thick. Its wall extends from the northeast to the southwest, with its northern half being stepped.

Athal Dam was built a double-wall system, with the intervening space filled with stones. Although sediment has accumulated within its basin, it remains in good condition.

This reflects its robustness and endurance as a living monument of Umayyad architecture and engineering precision.
