Eastern
Tarout Castle, locally known as the Portuguese Castle, represents one of the prominent landmarks in the historical memory of the Eastern Province. It is one of the most important historical defensive castles in the centre of Tarout, built by the Portuguese in the 16th century AD on the ruins of previous settlements dating back 5,000 years to reinforce their defensive positions in the region and protect their naval fleets. |
The castle occupies an area of approximately 5,000 m², and it was built on a high rocky hill. It features four towers, one of which is dilapidated. The castle is surrounded by farms, houses, water springs, a sulphur water well, a magnificent palm oasis, and the remains of the old traditional neighbourhood, completing the image of the archaeological site which blends authentic heritage and natural beauty. |
From a tourism perspective, this castle is a significant archaeological landmark that bears witness to the civilization of the Eastern Province. Its location in the city centre grants it a unique status that enhances its tourist appeal, supported by its proximity to several cultural sites. Thus, it remains a major stop in historical exploration trips in the region. |
