Hanifa Valley (Wadi Hanifa)

120 Kilometers of Nature and History in the Heart of Najd

Riyadh

Hanifa Valley is a natural and historical landmark extending 160 km through the city of Riyadh. It is considered one of the most important valleys in the center of the Arabian Peninsula, contributing to the establishment of ancient settlements like Al-Dir'iyah. It is characterized by its seasonal flow and ecological diversity, making it a primary destination today for ecotourism and recreation.

Hanifa Valley stretches 160 km south and north of Riyadh City, within a catchment basin estimated at about 3,450 km². It cuts through historical areas that formed the nucleus of settlement in the Al-Yamamah region, such as Al-Dir'iyah, Al-'Ammariyyah, and Al-'Uyaynah. It was known historically as “Wadi Al-'Ardh,”and was famous for its perennial flow and fertile soil, making it an ideal environment for agriculture and settlement since pre-Islamic times.

It is fed by over 40 tributaries, including: Laban Valley, Namar Valley, Al-'Ammariyyah Valley, and Al-Haisiyyah Stream. It also contains ancient water structures, including dams, barriers, and wells, indicating significant agricultural and engineering activity during various periods of Islamic history, particularly in areas like Al-Tuwayqiyyah and Al-Humaydiyyah.

In the modern era, the valley has seen massive environmental development projects, rehabilitating its course, creating pedestrian pathways and recreation areas, turning it into a natural retreat for Riyadh residents. It is also an area rich in biodiversity, attracting local and migratory birds, which enhances its status as an important site for ecotourism and birdwatching in the Middle East.
